Correspondence, 1890-1957 1909-1953.

This series contains correspondence to and from the Executive Board of the Women's Missionary Society (WMS) of the Augustana Evangelical Lutheran Church. The records are from 1890-1957, but the majority of correspondence is from 1909-1935. These records were generated in the regular course of business of the Women's Missionary Society and reflect the particular causes and concerns of the day. Correspondence occurs in handwritten and typewritten form with some items written in Swedish. Subjects addressed in these records include concerns regarding the particular foreign and home mission projects to which the WMS was contributing funds. In particular there is correspondence regarding the hospital in Rajahmundry, India, the Charlotte Swensson Memorial Bible School in India, WMS-supported war relief efforts in France, the Women's Industrial School in China, exploration regarding the need for doctors and nurses in Africa, and immigrant relief work on Ellis Island by a WMS-supported deaconess. In addition to correspondence regarding mission fields, other topics include the purchase and maintenance of the WMS Headquarters at 3939 Pine Grove, Chicago, Illinois, correspondence from women pursuing educational studies funded in part by missionary scholarships provided by the WMS, and petitions from WMS conference societies pertaining to requests for financial aid or changes in the WMS constitution. Authors include Dr. Emmy Evald, the Rev. Frederick Knubel, Dr. Betty A. Nilsson, Dr. Lydia Woerner, Hulda Hultquist, Gertrude Hult, Dr. Lillian Olson, Otelia Swanson, and Thyra Lawson.
